My friend Annie is a Girl Scout leader, and she asked me to come do something with her group of six 4th and 5th graders. I loaded up a suitcase with various hand instruments and brought some recording gear with me, and it was pretty crazy! There turned out to be 15 girls from age 7 to 13 or so, and I immediately jettisoned my plan.
I took them one at a time into the church nursery and recorded each girl playing the instrument of her choice. No one really knew how to play, but everyone was very eager to participate. I cut and pasted and edited what I collected into this sound sketch, which Annie said captures the chaos and spirit of a typical meeting rather well. Annie’s dog Happy makes a featured cameo appearance to end the piece. We might reconvene and add some vocals at some future time, but for now, this is what I came up with:
